We investigated the effects of Origanum onites, commonly known as oregano, on cholesterol levels and overall endothelial function among 48 patients with mild hyperlipidaemia. The participants were given lifestyle and dietary recommendations, but the study group, consisting of 32 patients, also received 25 ml of oregano distillate after each meal for three months.

The results were promising. We observed a notable increase in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, often referred to as the "good" cholesterol, alongside significant decreases in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, apolipoprotein B, lipoprotein(a), and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein in the study group.

Furthermore, activities related to antioxidant enzymes and blood vessel dilation showed marked improvements in those consuming the oregano distillate compared to the 16 patients in the control group. All these findings suggest that incorporating oregano into daily life may have beneficial effects on cholesterol management and cardiovascular health for individuals dealing with mild hyperlipidaemia.
